Lower Extremity

This condition can affect both men and women, and our goal is to provide effective, personalized care to each patient.

The Lymphatic System: A Vital Network

The lymphatic system is a complex network of vessels and nodes that plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's fluid balance and immune function. It operates through the pumping action of muscles, helping to move protein-rich lymphatic fluid and remove toxins and waste from the body.

Lymphedema: A Chronic Condition

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic fluid's flow is obstructed or when its volume exceeds the lymphatic system's capacity to drain it. This leads to swelling in the subcutaneous tissues and can cause chronic inflammation and discomfort.

Goals of Rehabilitation and Therapy

While there is currently no cure for lymphedema, our therapeutic interventions aim to significantly reduce swelling and improve the functionality of the remaining lymphatic pathways. Our objectives include achieving functional independence, preventing infections, and minimizing fibrotic tissue.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

Our comprehensive approach to lower extremity lymphedema care includes Complete Decongestive Therapy. This therapy consists of:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage: A gentle technique that stimulates lymph flow.

  • Compression Therapy: Helps maintain reduced swelling and supports the lymphatic system.

  • Therapeutic Exercise: Tailored exercises to improve mobility and strength.

  • Skin Care Education: Guidance on maintaining healthy skin to prevent complications.
